A) Hints for the Florists:
When the Florist receives the Flower, he should treat it with great care, hence it’s a life product, perishable and delicate.
We ship the flowers inside boxes, not in water, when it passes for several hours, even days of transportation. The frist thing to do is:
Open the boxes and verify if the roses are “warm”; if so, let them “cool” inside the box into the room temparature. This “heat” is provocated by the trip itself.
Then, take the roses out of the boxes, check the state of the flowers and take the leaves off from the middle section down.
After, cut the bottom of the stem about 2 cm, to then, place it in water.
Be careful that the bucket where the roses will be placed is clean and washed, preferentially with neutral soap and a little bit of bleach, to disinfect it.
The water where the flowers will go must be clean, free of leaves, dust or other contaminating agents. The water should be trated with some products, such as:
Active Cloride ou Bleach: 02 to 03 ml per liter of water
Commercial Products:
Krisal: 05 to 10 ml per liter of water
Florisan: 05 to 08 ml per liter of water
Flowers - 05 ml/litro
Then, take the flowers into the cooling chamber with temperature between 01 and 4 degrees celsius, umidity 70 to 85%.
When there’s no Cooling Chamber avaiable, it could be used:
Refrigerators made specially for Flower Shops
Horizontal Freezers;
Rooms with air conditining, placing pots with water around the flower buckets to maintain the room umidity high;
In last case, in open air, at a fresh place, with no wind or sunshine, wetting the floor to keep it moist.
In any kind of refrigerator or freezer that the flowers will be kept, the temperature should always be above 0 degree, mainly between 2 and 8.
Avoid mechanical damage with excess handling.
Do not expose the flower to wind, since it’s roses number 1 enemy.
To cut the stems, use appropriate tools, like scissors or a very well sharp pocket-knife to avoid damaging the tissues.
Don’t hit the buds on tables.
In case the flower will be immediatly processed, take the package off; if not, keep the package while storing.
Keep the working place always very clean and desinfected, such as shed, Cooling Chamber, Tables, Tools and buckets.
Pass the roses to the final customer as fast as possible.
Repassar para o cliente final o mais rápido possível.
B) Hints to final consumers:
Add water as flowers absorb it, or change it thoroughly, and do not forget to always keep the recommended water level.
Before placing your roses in water, re-cut every stem about 2 to 3 cm diagonally;
Do not place you roses in a very bright place;
Every other day, re-cut every stem about 1 or 2 cms;
If possible, add floral preservative solution to the water. This type of product can be obtained at flower shops;
Remove all leaves that will be under the water level. Remember, foliage must never be in contact with water;
The water level in the vase should reach 7 to 10 cms. Contrary to some people beliefs, water has to be in contact with the stems only, not with the leaves;
